Avocado grower, Ben Holtz, will give a presentation at the March meeting of the Dos Valles Garden Club. Ben is known to many of us as he was the recipient of the annual DVGC scholarship through his college years at Cal State San Luis Obispo where he was a Cum Laude graduate in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in BioResource and Agricultural Engineering. He is a fourth generation avocado grower who has served on the California Avocado Commission Board of Directors for the past 3 years. His mission is to promote California-grown avocados and to expand a customer base by means of internet marketing and personal promotion.
To that end, he has launched a business headquartered on his family’s 70 acre avocado ranch in Valley Center which markets jumbo, hand-selected, gift-packaged avocados to customers around the country. He has designed a system of same day picking, packing and shipping fresh-from-the-grove avocados in special insulated packaging. The company website, CaliforniaAvocadosDirect.com, illustrates the wide variety of avocados offered, including avocado kits with salsa and other local produce.
This enterprising young man represents the future of the California avocado industry. This is our opportunity to welcome Ben back and hear about his post-college activities and efforts to keep agriculture a viable presence in our local economy.
